Reservoir Dogs (1992) — slow-motion opening credits walk
See our character’s iconic-scene parody →A gang in black suits leaves a diner and walks to the parking lot, and over slowed-down footage and a jaunty song, each man's face and name appear one by one. Borrow it when you need a cool introduction that says "these are our main people", such as a team introduction, a new-product launch entrance, or the intro of a club or company promo video.
Footage shot at 24fps is lowered to 12fps, so the same frames repeat and the steps look slightly choppy (Art of the Title).
To recreate it: Slow a clip generated at normal speed to 50% in editing and turn frame interpolation off, and you get a similar choppiness.
The camera tracks alongside the group walking in front of a brick wall and a sky-blue pickup truck (clip around 0:10).
To recreate it: Write 'side tracking shot moving parallel to the group' so the camera moves sideways at the same speed as the group.
The walking faces are framed one by one from the chest up, and the actor's name appears over each in mustard-colored serif letters (Art of the Title, clip 0:16–0:55).
To recreate it: Generate each character separately, but write the suit, tie, and sunglasses phrases the same so they read as one group.
The identical black suits, white shirts, and thin black ties repeat, so the group looks like one body (No Film School).
To recreate it: Fix the outfit in one sentence and copy it into every shot; describe only the hairstyle and build differently.
Behind each face close-up, the faces and shoulders of the other members overlap, giving the feeling of being one of a group rather than alone (observation).
To recreate it: Add 'other men walking just behind him, slightly out of focus' to keep the group in the background.
The actors' names appear one after another over the walking scene, and at the end the title rises from the bottom over the group walking away (Art of the Title, clip around 0:55).
To recreate it: Don't leave the lettering to the AI; add it in editing. Place the figures in the lower part of the frame to leave room for the text.
The radio DJ's voice that began at the end of the diner scene carries across the black screen, and soon a jaunty song covers the whole walking scene (clip 0:00–0:20).
To recreate it: Turn off the sound of the generated clips and lay one song from start to finish in editing, and the scene stays one piece even when the cuts change.
Cinematic multi-shot sequence, 12 seconds total. Shot 1 (4s): side tracking shot moving parallel to six men in identical black suits, white shirts and thin black ties walking past a brick wall, stuttering slow motion; Shot 2 (2s): medium close-up of a sunglassed man walking toward the lens as the camera moves backward ahead of him; Shot 3 (2s): medium close-up of a bald older man walking, stern, the camera moving backward ahead of him; Shot 4 (4s): static wide shot from behind as the group walks away across a sunny parking lot. Consistent black-suited crew, flat hazy daylight, warm 35mm film look, 2.35:1 widescreen.
According to Art of the Title, this scene was shot at 24fps and stretched by lowering it to 12fps, so unlike the smooth slow motion of high-speed shooting, it has a slightly choppy "jaunty elegance". No Film School explains that using slow motion on plain walking unrelated to the plot makes the audience observe each man's gait and attitude, and that the identical black suits and framing show the group's cohesion and pecking order. The film shows the diner conversation first, and only then puts the names and title over this walk.
Side tracking shot moving parallel to six men in identical black suits, white shirts and thin black ties walking in a loose line past a brick wall and a pale blue pickup truck; stuttering step-printed slow motion, flat hazy daylight, warm 35mm film look.
Medium close-up of a man in black sunglasses and a black suit walking toward the lens, camera moving backward ahead of him, other suited men slightly out of focus behind; stuttering slow motion, flat daylight, warm 35mm film look.
Medium close-up of a bald older man in a black suit and tie walking toward the lens with a stern face, two suited men overlapping behind his shoulders; camera moving backward ahead of him, stuttering slow motion, flat daylight, warm 35mm film look.
Wide shot from behind of six men in black suits walking away together across a sunny parking lot toward parked cars, empty sky above them left for a title; static camera, stuttering slow motion, flat hazy daylight, warm 35mm film look, 2.35:1 widescreen.
Lay the song as one track from the start, introduce the group with the profile view in Shot 1, then join the face cuts (Shots 2 and 3) at 2 seconds each, one per character. Show a name caption for about 1.5 seconds on each face, and in Shot 4 raise the title from bottom to top over the figures walking away.
If you put 'slow motion' in at generation, the AI makes it smooth like high-speed footage, so generate at normal speed, slow it to 50% in editing, and turn frame interpolation off to get the original's choppiness. Lock the six men's outfits with the same sentence, and use a reference image for each man's face. Add the name and title text in editing.
